This afternoon (June 2, 2025), Union City Police responded to a call involving a suicidal male threatening “suicide by cop” in the 500 block of N. High St.

The individual, identified as Theodore Heiligenberg of Union City, was found outside his home armed with a loaded handgun and a sawed-off shotgun. A trained negotiator from the Greenville Police Department responded to assist and worked to de-escalate the situation as the subject repeatedly entered and exited his home while armed.

Due to the seriousness of the threat, our Special Emergency Tactical Team (SETT) was activated. Officers utilized the MRAP vehicle and a distraction device, safely taking Heiligenberg into custody without injury.

He was transported to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. He will be charged with:

  • Intimidation (Level 5 Felony)
  • Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm (Level 6 Felony)

The police are also working with the ATF regarding potential federal charges related to the sawed-off shotgun.

The Union City Police thanked the Greenville Police Department for their critical assistance during this incident. Their support helped bring this situation to a peaceful resolution.

And to our community— thank you for your patience, understanding, and for following the shelter-in-place request. Your cooperation played a big role in keeping everyone safe.
