COLUMBUS (2-5-25) – State Reps. Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) and Angie King (R-Celina) recently introduced legislation to designate a portion of US Route 33 in Auglaize County as the Lt. James A. Kirkendall Memorial Highway.
Lt. Kirkendall was a member of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and was killed in the line of duty on October 28, 1970. He was the post commander of Post 81 in Van Wert at the time of his death.

James A. Kirkendall
Lieutenant James Kirkendall was killed in an automobile collision involving two trucks on US Route 33 near St. Johns.
Lieutenant Kirkendall was traveling west on the rain-slicked road and clipped the left rear of a dump truck while changing lanes. His patrol vehicle spun into the eastbound lane and was struck by another truck.
Lieutenant Kirkendall was a WWII veteran who had served with the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 21 years and served as the commander of the Van Wert Post. He was survived by his wife and two children.
Klopfenstein said-
“We must always remember and honor the sacrifices our first responders make for the safety of our communities. Lt. Kirkendall was a public servant, and this highway will be a small way to honor his great legacy.”
King said-
“May this highway be a reminder to all who travel through Auglaize County of Lt. Kirkendall’s bravery and dedication to protecting his state.”
The legislation awaits a bill number and House committee assignment.
