(12-26-24) Rashawn Cannon (27) of Lima has been identified as the inmate suspect in connection with the killing of Correction Officer Andrew Lansing at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe.
Cannon was previously convicted of felony assault and illegally possessing a firearm in 2023. He was set to be eligible for parole in August 2030.
The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, a labor union representing correction officers in Ohio, said Lansing had written up Cannon in April for making threats.
Ohio Civil Services Employees Association President Chris Mabe said that between employees who were off and position vacancies, Ross Correctional Institution was short-staffed by as many as 40 officers as of Wednesday.
The union, in a letter sent to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, has asked him to suspend the state’s prisons director and the Ross Correctional Institution warden pending the investigation of Lansing’s death.
After Lansing’s death Cannon was transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
