A bill that will increase penalties for domestic violence is headed to Gov. Mike DeWine’s desk.

The bill, which passed the Ohio Senate unanimously Wednesday, would create a presumption of prison time for third degree felony domestic violence. Ohio law states that third degree felony domestic violence is when an offender knowingly or recklessly causes physical harm to a family or household member after being found guilty of two or more domestic violence offenses.

The bill mandates a year in prison if the offender knew the victim was pregnant at the time. Current law mandates six months in prison.

The bill also increases sentencing from one year to a mandatory 18 months if the offender caused serious physical harm to the fetus or the termination of the pregnancy.
