(10-1-24) The Twenty First Century Club met for the opening meeting of the year on September 24, 2024. The meeting was held at the beautiful new home of Kim Carr, club president, in Willshire, OH. She and vice president Twyla Hayes prepared a lovely dinner featuring chicken divan, salad, carrot and green bean medley and rolls with the help of Heather Schlickman. A delicious sugar cream dessert, homemade by Kim, topped off the meal. Kim welcomed everyone (in the absence of the vice-president) and called the meeting to order. Ten members and one guest were present. Roll-Call was completed with everyone stating their favorite mode of travel: car, airplane; ship; or train.

Minutes from the 100th Birthday Party Celebration in May of 2022 were read by Kim and approved. Valerie Fritzinger offered her treasurer’s report which was approved. A photo album of the party was passed around.

Dues of $5 were collected. Karla Butler reported that the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Rockford needs peanut butter (or member’s choice) to be collected at October’s meeting. The members decided to collect next month for the Combined Drive.

Sheryl Frahm, 48 year Honorary Member, joined us. The members looked over the new list of past members with their first names listed. They had previously each been listed under their husband’s name. Sheila Baltzell-Linn and Karla Butler worked last year to research the first names of these deceased members.

The new club season’s program booklets were passed out. The theme for the year “Adventures Await” was revealed by Kim. Her decorations matched the theme, and members had been guessing. Kim then performed a cute skit about getting on board a pretend airplane and traveling to Aruba, where she has actually vacationed with her husband and aunt and uncle. It was her best vacation ever, and we all learned about the tropical island and a site-seeing tour they took on a float on the ocean. Kim kept responding to the float driver’s comments about enjoying the ride with a “thumb’s up” gesture. Unfortunately, that meant “Go faster!” to him. Kim said it was the scariest ride ever, and they all thought a roll-over in the ocean was going to happen! Kim ended by explaining she likes to live vicariously through others’ adventures. She is looking forward to a club year with us telling about adventures that await outside the continental USA.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 7 PM at the Rockford United Methodist Church Cafe. Melanie Shindeldecker is hostessing with Janie Overley, and Val Fritzinger and Cindy Canary are providing the Adventure.
