SISTER JOYCE ANN ZIMMERMAN TO SPEAK AT SHRINE
MARIA STEIN, Ohio (September 26, 2024) – Mark your calendar to join us on October 8th & 17th for our Adoration Guild Fall Learning Series on Signs & Symbols and Liturgical Vision of Vatican II. Both sessions will be held in the Shrine’s Adoration Chapel and begin at 10:00am. They are free and open to the public.
We call our sacraments “outward signs.” What exactly is a sign? Where do symbols fit in? This first fall presentation will discuss the difference between signs and symbols, how we might better understand sacraments, and what are the signs and symbols we make use of during liturgy? Many more than we think! Signs and symbols enable us to be fully engaged during liturgy… including our bodies.
There is much discussion these days about Vatican II: was it a good move for the Church or not, how should we regard the liturgical changes the Council envisioned. This session will help us understand that the intent of the Council Fathers was not willy-nilly to change liturgy for some novel effect, but to study the historical development of liturgy and recover some of the richness of its ritual that had been lost through its historical development.
Both sessions are presented by Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman, C.PP.S. For 60 years, Sister Joyce Ann has belonged to a Congregation of women religious founded for Eucharistic Adoration. She is the founding director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry in Dayton, Ohio; an adjunct professor of liturgy; and a frequent facilitator of workshops on liturgy. She has published numerous scholarly and pastoral liturgical books and articles.
