Survey Summary:
This supercell produced an initial small, short track tornado in a corn field just east of the Salamonie River south of CR W 75 before it dissipated.

Survey Summary:
A second stronger tornado developed immediately downstream near the intersection of W 75 S and Joan Dr and quickly gained intensity as it tracked east northeast, hitting the Jay County High School which sustained considerable roof damage. Several homes nearby and further east on the west side of Portland sustained roof damage along with considerable tree damage noted along the track of this tornado. As the tornado was dissipating it caused extensive roof damage to the second story portion of the American
Legion. Many thanks to the Jay County Emergency Management office for their expert assistance.

(9-22-24) The City of Portland according to the Jay County Sheriff’s Office has suffered damage from a tornado tonight.

Reports are that damage has been reported to Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School with part of the roof being ripped off . No tornado warning was in effect for Jay County at the time.

From the Jay School Corporation:

This evening, Jay County Jr-Sr High was impacted by a tornado and sustained significant damage in a portion of the building. There have been no reports of injuries associated with this incident. As a result, the Jay School Corporation will be closed tomorrow, September 23rd, 2024, (no eLearning / Remote Learning).

We are currently conducting a thorough assessment of the site with local emergency management officials. We will provide an update tomorrow afternoon.
