Jay County- (9-6-24) A two-vehicle crash involving a school bus and a garbage disposal truck occurred at the intersection of State Road 1 and Boyce Street resulting in one student being transported to a local hospital by ambulance this morning.

According to the preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Ryan Davis, at approximately 7:48 am, a Jay County School Corporation school bus driven by Greg E. Rittenhouse (65) of Portland was stopped at the intersection of State Road 1 and Boyce Street.  At the time of the crash, the bus was loading students and displayed flashing red lights with a stop arm extended.  A Waste Management garbage disposal truck driven by Mark A. Dulworth (23) of Middletown, was traveling northbound on State Road 1 approaching the intersection of Boyce Street.  The garbage truck did not stop in time and collided with the back of the school bus.  

A juvenile student was transported by ambulance to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Both drivers were cooperative during the investigation and voluntarily submitted to testing. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.

Master Trooper A.J. Coffee of the Peru District, Jay County Sheriff’s Department, Redkey Police Department, Redkey Fire Department / EMS, Paddock’s Wrecker Service, and Barnett’s Towing assisted Trooper Davis in the investigation.
