Harrison E. “Harry” Shutt, 92, of Lima, passed away at 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at The Springs of Lima.
Harry was born January 19, 1932, in Lima, to Paul S. and Verla E. (May) Shutt who both preceded him in death. On June 11, 1960, he married the love of his life, Myrna Jean (Moorman) Shutt, who survives him. Together they raised two wonderful sons, Scott, and Sammy.
Harry was a 1950 graduate of Lima Central High School and a 1954 graduate of The Ohio State University. He was a member of the OSU ROTC and proudly served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. Qb Harry loved waking up early every morning to work hard, and to spend time with his employees and friends. A very civic minded person, Harry cared immensely about the Lima community and generously supported many local organizations and charities. Harry’s dedication to his family, the Kewpee, his employees, and the Lima community left little room for hobbies, but Harry did have a great love for his Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a major donor to Lima Memorial Hospital, the Allen County Fair, and Ohio Northern University. Harry served for many years on the Lima Memorial Board of Trustees, the Ohio Northern University Board of Trustees, and The Ohio State University – Lima Citizens Council. Harry has been honored by countless organizations for his time, support, and contributions. In 1987 he was awarded the Lima Noon Sertoma Service to Mankind Award, 1990 Lima Area Chamber of Commerce Small Businessman of the Year, 1990 Lima Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds, 1991 First Honorary Friend of Allen County 4-H, 1992 ONU Honorary Doctorate, 1993 Lima City Schools Distinguished Hall of Fame, 1997 The Ohio State Alumni Association – Alumni Citizenship Award, 2001 Governor’s Award for the Arts, 2003 LCC Hall of Fame, 2007 Allen County Agricultural Hall of Fame, 2009 Lima Memorial EMS Driveway “Harry Shutt Way”, 2011 YMCA Triangle of Honor, 2011 first recipient of the Lima / Allen County Senior Lifetime Achievement Award, 2013 Mercy Club Award, 2014 Visionary Citizen of the Year, 2015 Arts Advocacy Collaborative of West Central Ohio “Philanthropist Award”, 2015 Lima / Allen County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award, 2017 Furl Williams Award, 2018 Lima City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame, and 2021 he was inducted into the Allen County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Harry also received an Honorary FFA Degree and was a charter member of the Ohio Restaurant Association Hall of Fame. Harry and his wife Myrna have sponsored the Ohio Northern Holiday Spectacular for the past 30 years. Harry found immense joy in providing an affordable holiday tradition for families and spreading cheer throughout his community and beyond.
Harry is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Myrna Jean Shutt; son, Scott L. (Terri) Shutt; granddaughter, Emily (Jared) Brown; grandson, Sam (Jamie Schirra) Shutt; and great-grandchildren, Hadley, and Barrett Brown.
