From the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (7-6-24) — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a cherished bat-eared fox, Bruce, at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. “Brucie,” “Boots,” “Boy,” “Brother” – the little creature with so many nicknames – captured everyone’s heart from the moment they met him. Named after the legendary Bruce Wayne, Bruce introduced countless visitors to the fascinating bat-eared fox species from Africa.

Bruce

Our dedicated Conservation Medicine team, alongside the Animal Care team, worked diligently to manage Bruce’s long-term health issues. Despite their best efforts, recent bloodwork during a routine recheck exam showed a decline in his condition. After realizing that continued medical management was no longer possible, the care teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.

Bruce’s playful spirit and unique personality made him an unforgettable part of Jack Hanna’s Animal Encounters Village in our Adventure Cove region. We will forever miss his joyful zoomies, his endearing smile with those tiny teeth, his excitement for finding crickets, and his peaceful sunbathing moments with his sister. He was a master at scent marking, a true star in training sessions, and one of our most photogenic and beloved animals for guest engagement.

Bruce’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of meeting him. He was a friend, an ambassador, and a joy to be around. We will miss you dearly, Bruce.
