(1-8-24) At tonight’s Celina City Council meeting members just passed 3-24-R to a second reading with a 6-0 and one abstaining vote.

In a reply on the vote at the regular meeting of the Mercer County Democratic Party tonight the following resolution was passed:

The Mercer County Democratic Party condemns Celina City Council’s 3-24-R resolution supporting HB245, a bill that egregiously bans all citizen’s right to freedom of expression under the 1st Amendment and discriminates against transgender individuals. As introduced, HB245 is not only unconstitutional but is also unenforceable. It is unacceptable for Celina City Council to purport to represent all citizens while endorsing such deeply flawed legislation.

Celina City Council’s actions are not just divisive; they display a lack of understanding and acceptance that the public will rightly perceive as unacceptable. In seeking leadership, people expect a commitment to progress, not a stage for political theatrics. The decision to pass resolutions supporting alienating state legislation only spreads further division at a time when unity and collaboration should be paramount.

Sophia Rodriguez, Mercer County Democratic Party Chair said-

“Acceptance and progress are inevitable. Just because you don’t want drag to exist doesn’t mean you can legislate it away. Be careful who you hate; it might be someone you love.”
