(11-1-23) The Mercer County District Library, in collaboration with the Celina-Mercer County Chamber, the Mercer County Fairgrounds, and the generous contributions of local organizations, is excited to announce the acquisition of over 35,000 custom Solar Eclipse glasses for the Mercer County community in anticipation of the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The glasses will be distributed to the community for free at our partnering organizations.

In addition to the dedication and hard work of the partners involved, the success of this project would not have been possible without the generous support from several community organizations. The Mercer County District Library is thrilled to recognize the significant contributions from the Celina Eagles #1291, the Celina Rotary Club, and the Rotary District 6600, who have played a vital role in making this resource accessible to all.

These organizations have provided substantial donations and grants, allowing the partnership to secure a sufficient quantity of Solar Eclipse glasses to ensure that every Mercer County resident who wishes to participate in viewing the Solar Eclipse can do so safely and without financial burden. The custom glasses also promote the Solar Eclipse Festival being planned at the Mercer County Fairgrounds April 6th-8th 2024. This event will bring additional viewers to the area to experience this momentous occasion and promote economic activity.

Mercer County District Library, with branches in Celina, Marion, Mendon, and St. Henry, has also partnered with neighboring libraries in Coldwater, Ft. Recovery, and Rockford, to help distribute glasses to the community. The Solar Eclipse glasses distribution will commence in February and March of 2024, and the specific distribution locations and times will be provided through the participating libraries and local partners. This collaborative effort ensures that the entire community can come together to witness the awe-inspiring celestial event.

Eric Lochtefeld, the Mercer County District Library’s Technology Specialist and Coordinator of the Solar Eclipse Glasses Project, added-

“The support from our local organizations has truly been overwhelming. With their help, we can bring the joy of science and the wonder of the universe to Mercer County residents. This event will not only be educational but also a memorable experience for everyone who participates.”
