(9-14-23) On Tuesday the 12th day of September 2023 at approximately 8:37 PM Decatur Police Officer’s responded to the residence of John Evans (61) and Jill Evans (58), reference to a welfare check. This residence is in the 200 block of Park Place in Decatur, Indiana. The caller was concerned because they had not been able to contact Jill all day.

Officer’s on scene eventually made entry into the residence and located John and Jill, both of which were deceased. A preliminary investigation leads investigators to believe John shot Jill, and then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. It appears this occurred several hours prior to the caller notifying authorities about their concern.

The Decatur PD does not believe this specific neighborhood and/or our community as a whole is in any kind of on-going threat as a result of this incident. This appears to be a very unfortunate isolated tragedy. This investigation is still on-going by Decatur Police, Indiana State Police, and the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
