(9-8-23) The Shanes Crossing Historical Society of Rockford will meet on Monday, September 18th at 7 pm in the museum and town hall located at 151 E Columbia St.

The program will involve Mr. Minnich, the Social Studies teacher at Parkway High School. Mr. Minnich and several students will make a presentation about a local Civil War veteran, Aaron Sutton, who was captured and held in prison camp and escaped twice. The students will present their findings about the food that was eaten in the prison, including recipes.

Aaron Sutton, was a Union solider from Rockford, who survived the Civil War, including stays in two Confederate prisons camps.

Sutton in 1862 enlisted in the U.S. Army. Instead of joining a Mercer County outfit, he opted for the 83rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was based around Cincinnati, where he came from.


Mr. Harrison Frech, former Social Studies teacher at Parkway High School will present his findings about the 83rd Volunteer Infantry of Ohio which was the division that Aaron Sutton was serving in when he was captured.

The public is encouraged and welcome to attend.
