(9-5-23) Sunday night at 9:57pm Van Wert County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on Sponsellor Street in the Village of Convoy to investigate a report of domestic violence.

Zachary James Brooks (30) of Convoy was arrested and transported to the Van Wert County Correctional Facility. Brooks was charged with Strangulation a Fifth Degree Felony.

In April 2023, Ohio was the last state to make Strangulation a felony offense rather than a misdemeanor.

Ohio Revised Code 2903.18 classifies “strangulation or suffocation” as any act that impedes the normal breathing or circulation of the blood by applying pressure to the throat or neck, or by covering the nose and mouth.
