(8-29-23) Two beers a week is being recommended by CDC, this will follow what Canada did earlier this year.
One result of the Canadian recommendation was …. On April 1, 2023, liquor in Canada will cost more thanks to an alcohol tax hike implemented by the federal government. The increase is a result of an annual escalator excise tax implemented in 2017. The escalator tax allows the federal government to automatically raise taxes on alcohol in response to inflation.
So what are the chances of these guidelines being implemented in the US?
White House laughs off report Biden wants to limit Americans beer consumption
The Independent – You Tube Video
Yesterday’s White House briefing—
Fox News Peter Doocy – Question – Dr. George Koob, who is the director of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, says the U.S. may soon follow Canada and recommend just two beers a week. How do you guys think that’s going to go over?
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Let me tell you what I’m not going to get involved in — in that in that question right there. I — I have no idea. I’ve not seen the data. I cannot speak to this. I will leave it to the experts and not weigh in.
Question: So, if the experts say two beers a week —
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I — I —
Q — that’s okay with President Biden?
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I will leave it to the experts. I’m just not going to comment on that.
CDC Dietary Guidelines for Alcohol
- Alcohol consumption is associated with a variety of short- and long-term health risks, including motor vehicle crashes, violence, sexual risk behaviors, high blood pressure, and various cancers (e.g., breast cancer).1
- The risk of these harms increases with the amount of alcohol you drink. For some conditions, like some cancers, the risk increases even at very low levels of alcohol consumption (less than 1 drink).2,3
- To reduce the risk of alcohol-related harms, the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults of legal drinking age can choose not to drink, or to drink in moderation by limiting intake to 2 drinks or less in a day for men or 1 drink or less in a day for women, on days when alcohol is consumed.4 The Guidelines also do not recommend that individuals who do not drink alcohol start drinking for any reason and that if adults of legal drinking age choose to drink alcoholic beverages, drinking less is better for health than drinking more.4
Some say this will be a new form of prohibition…the last time that happened was almost 100 years ago back in the 1920’s.
Ratified on January 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment prohibited the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors“.
In a statement to The National Desk (TND), Distilled Spirits Council Vice President of Science and Health Amanda Berger, Ph.D.
“Dr. Koob’s comments calling for a drastic change to the federal recommendations on alcohol before the review of alcohol research has even begun undermines the scientific rigor and objectivity of the entire Dietary Guidelines process. It is extremely alarming and inappropriate for a federal official to predetermine the outcome of the Dietary Guidelines and suggest changing decades of precedent without the benefit of the scientific review to support such a sweeping move.”
