(10-26-21) Last night at a lengthy Celina City Council meeting Council members voted down the 1st reading of ordinance 51-21-O. The ordinance would outlaw abortion and would have declared Celina as a sanctuary city for the unborn.

51-21-O: Ordinance outlawing abortion, declaring Celina a sanctuary for the unborn, making
various provisions and findings, providing for severability, establishing an effective date, and
declaring an emergency.

The vote was 4 to 2 against the ordinance with Council Members June Scott, Mark Fleck, Myron Buxton and Eric Lochteld voting no and council members Eric Clausen and Eric Baltzell voting yes. Councilman Mike Sovinski was absent.

Eric Lochtefeld (D – At-Large) voted no stating it was ‘potentially an unconstitutional ordinance‘, while Eric Clausen (R – 4th Ward) voted yes stating ‘with my faith its my belief and also the beleif of the catholic church that abortion is murder’.

The ordinance will still move forward to a 2nd and 3rd reading.

Concerns were first brought up by City Council President Jason King in June of this year after a statement made by President Biden on January 22nd released by President Joe Biden.

On May 25th the Lebanon, Ohio City Council passed legislation that would not allow for an abortion clinic in the city.
